This research project is devoted to the recovery, cataloguing, and critical valorisation of the writings of Giulio Cesare Castello published in the weekly magazine Il Punto between 1956 and 1965, a chronological span that coincides with the entire editorial life of the periodical and with one of the most significant seasons in the history of Italian cinema. The aim of the project is to reconstruct Castello’s contribution in an organic manner, producing a research tool of use for the study of post-war film criticism and of the intellectual context in which it developed. Trained initially as a theatre critic, Castello progressively consolidated his standing as a film critic, essayist, researcher, documentary filmmaker, and scholar of the performing arts, collaborating with some of the most authoritative national publications in the field — among them Cinema (1936–1956), Cinema Nuovo (1956–1996), and Bianco e Nero (1937) — thereby establishing himself as a key figure in the artistic debate of his time.
Il Punto, a weekly current-affairs magazine directed by Vittorio Calef and marked by a progressive orientation, established itself over its nine years of existence as one of the principal arenas of Italian political and cultural debate. Within the magazine, Giulio Cesare Castello represented an essential voice in the critical reflection on the Seventh Art. His activity for the journal also extended to reportage on major international film festivals — Venice, Cannes, Berlin, and Karlovy Vary — which he attended as a correspondent. Castello’s close ties to the Venice International Film Festival (attested by numerous articles he wrote for Il Punto) found further confirmation in his presence on the jury of the twenty-second edition, in 1961, which awarded the Golden Lion to Alain Resnais’s L’Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad), a work destined to exert a profound influence on the evolution of global cinematic language.
The research was carried out at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Rome and involved the identification, recovery, cataloguing, and systematic organisation of the articles published by Giulio Cesare Castello in the pages of Il Punto. This work has made it possible to reconstruct, in organic form, a body of writings that had hitherto remained unsystematised, rendering it more readily accessible for consultation and further research. The value of the project, however, is not exhausted in the recovery and ordering of the materials: it lies above all in the restitution of a critical source contemporaneous with the events it describes, capable of documenting with immediacy the evolution of Italian and international cinema during one of the most fertile seasons in its history.
Through Castello’s privileged vantage point as an observer, these writings allow us to retrace the emergence of authors, works, and movements at the very moment of their affirmation, offering a direct perspective that precedes subsequent historiographical and critical elaborations. In this sense, the systematisation of this documentary heritage provides a research tool of particular significance for the study of the history of Italian film criticism, the cultural debate of the post-war period, and Giulio Cesare Castello’s contribution to the construction of twentieth-century film culture.

<!-- {"type":"layout","children":[{"type":"section","props":{"id":"about","image_loading":true,"image_position":"top-center","padding_remove_bottom":true,"style":"default","title_breakpoint":"xl","title_position":"top-left","title_rotation":"left","vertical_align":"","width":"large"},"children":[{"type":"row","children":[{"type":"column","props":{"image_position":"center-center","position_sticky_breakpoint":"m"},"children":[{"type":"headline","props":{"content":"

Alberto de Carolis Villars

“La purezza dello sguardo: Giulio Cesare Castello e gli scritti de Il Punto.”
","title_decoration":"divider","title_element":"h1","title_style":"h3"}}]}]},{"type":"row","props":{"column_gap":"large","layout":"3-4,1-4","row_gap":"medium"},"children":[{"type":"column","props":{"image_position":"center-center","position_sticky_breakpoint":"m","width_medium":"3-4"},"children":[{"type":"text","props":{"column_breakpoint":"m","content":"

Referente: Prof. Vito Zagarrio (Università Roma Tre)
