This dissertation presents the critical edition of twenty-six concertos for solo violin and string orchestra by Giuseppe Tartini, preserved in manuscript transmission. It represents the first Tartinian study to address such an extensive corpus of manuscript compositions from descriptive, analytical, critical-philological, and historiographical perspectives. The thesis stems from an assigned-topic research project, pivoting around two selection criteria for the repertoire: the manuscript tradition of the concertos and their presumed dating to Tartini’s “first creative period” (1721-1735), as established by Minos Dounias in 1935. Dounias’s influential periodization has never been questioned by Tartini scholars, accepted it despite its being based on a stylistic analysis lacking confirmed documentary and historical evidence. Furthermore, it is clear that, in his work on Tartini’s artistic biography, the musicologist crafted a historiographical narrative modeled, more or less forcefully, on that of Beethoven’s life and oeuvre. For these two reasons, it was deemed appropriate to begin this research – structured in four chapters – with a reexamination of Dounias’s work, through a material, codicological, and chronological analysis of the 102 manuscript sources of the concertos.
The first chapter examines four cross-cutting themes across all twenty-six concertos, divided into four sections. The first section provides a formal description of the concertos, while the second presents a recensio of the thirteen collections holding the manuscript sources. Particular attention is given to the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which can be precisely dated and, in part, traced back Tartini’s autographs. The third section analyzes the author’s manuscripts and proposes to classify them into two broad cathegories (“public” and “private” autographs), built upon recent developments in music genetic criticism. The fourth section addresses the theme of Tartinian mottos, opening up interpretive and genetic questions.
The second chapter contains the editorial and textual criteria of the edition and the musical texts of the concertos, which are accompanied in the third chapter by the critical apparatus, divided into two sections: the description and critique of the manuscripts and the list of variants. The fourth chapter traces the historiographical discourses that have coalesced around Tartini from 1768 to the present day, which are useful for challenging the unified, culturally oriented and stratified perspectives – such as that of Dounias – on Tartini’s biography and ouvre.
In conclusion, the dissertation achieves advances by first providing an authoritative critical edition for the twenty-six selected concertos and by discussing the historiographical classification of Tartini’s “early period” of composition. Moreover, it adopts an alternative methodological approach based on material analysis, allowing new evaluations of both the Parisian collection and the autographs, which are investigated here for the first time from a genetic perspective. Finally, the historiographical discussion reconstructs the substrate of culturally oriented connotations and values that have influenced recent studies, thereby allowing one to move beyond the widespread and oversimplified view of a linear and continuous progress of the composer at both a personal and a professional level.

<!-- {"type":"layout","children":[{"type":"section","props":{"id":"about","image_loading":true,"image_position":"top-center","padding_remove_bottom":true,"style":"default","title_breakpoint":"xl","title_position":"top-left","title_rotation":"left","vertical_align":"","width":"large"},"children":[{"type":"row","children":[{"type":"column","props":{"image_position":"center-center","position_sticky_breakpoint":"m"},"children":[{"type":"headline","props":{"content":"

Chiara Casarin

","title_decoration":"divider","title_element":"h1","title_style":"h3"}}]}]},{"type":"row","props":{"column_gap":"large","layout":"3-4,1-4","row_gap":"medium"},"children":[{"type":"column","props":{"image_position":"center-center","position_sticky_breakpoint":"m","width_medium":"3-4"},"children":[{"type":"text","props":{"column_breakpoint":"m","content":"

Relatore: Prof. Sergio Durante (Università degli Studi di Padova)
Correlatrice: Prof.ssa Vincenzina Caterina Ottomano (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia)
